今日はマーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア（以下、キング牧師）についてお話します。
キング牧師は、アメリカで人種差別をなくすことに生涯をささげました。
バス乗車ボイコット運動
1955年に、アラバマ州モンゴメリーで裁縫師だったローザ・パークスが、バスの中で白人の乗客に席を譲るのを拒否したために逮捕されました。
この逮捕をきっかけにバプテスト教会の牧師に着任したばかりのキング牧師らが抗議運動に立ち上がり、モンゴメリーのすべての黒人にバス・ボイコット運動を呼びかけます。
当時貧しい黒人にとってバスは必須の交通機関で、利用者の75パーセント以上が黒人でした。彼らがバスをボイコットしたことで、バス路線を運営するモンゴメリー市は経済的に大きな打撃を被ります。
1956年には、最高裁判所がアラバマ州においてバスに適用される人種分離法を違憲としました。
ノーベル平和賞受賞
1964年にキング牧師は、非暴力の抗議活動を主導した功績によりノーベル平和賞を受賞しました。
同年、雇用と教育の機会均等を求める公民権法が可決されました。その後もキング牧師は、黒人が安全に選挙登録し投票する権利を保証する投票権法など多くの法改革を推進しました。

1963年に8月、キング牧師は、ワシントンのナショナル・モールに集まった20万人以上の人たちを前に、「私には夢がある」の演説を行いました。
この演説は多くの人々の胸を打ちました。
