みなさんは、アップル製品を使用していますか？
今日は、アップル社の共同設立者の一人、スティーブン・ポール・“スティーブ”・ジョブズ（Steven Paul “Steve” Jobs）がスタンフォード大学の卒業式でスピーチした内容を英語と共に見ていきましょう。スピーチでは、主に3つの話をしています。まずは1つ目「点を点のつながり」です。
生まれる前
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.
訳）それは、私が生まれる前までさかのぼります。私の実の母は未婚の大学院生で、私を養子に出すことを決めていました。
彼女は、私の養子先は、大卒の夫婦であることを強く希望していました。彼女の希望通り、私が生まれる前には弁護士の男性の家庭に引き取られることに決まっていました。

Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.”
訳）しかし、実際に私が生まれた時に、彼らは「やっぱり女の子が欲しい」と言い出したのです。
私の育ての親は真夜中に電話で、「生まれたばかりの男の子がいるが、引き取りますか？」と聞かれたのです。彼らは「もちろん」と受けてくれたのです。
実の母の反対と育ての親の約束
My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college. This was the start in my life.
訳：）私の実の母親は、私の育ての親となる母が大卒でないこと、そして父が高校をも卒業していないことを知り、養子縁組の書類にサインすることを拒否しました。
しかし、数ケ月後、育ての親が「この男の子は必ず大学進学させる」と実の母に約束したことで、正式に養子縁組が決まりました。これが私の人生のはじまりです。
そして、私は大学に進学
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
訳：）そして17年後に私はリードカレッジに入学しました。
両親は貯金をはたいて、スタンフォードと同じくらい高い学費を払ってくれたのです。貯えは全て私の大学の学費で消えました。
ところが、半年もすると、私は自分が何をしたいのか、そして、授業が何の役に立つのかわからなくなました。そこで、学校に行くことをやめました。それで、うまくいくと信じて。
これは、怖い決断でもありましたが、今から振り返れば人生最良の選択でした。その後も、友達の部屋に寝泊まりして、興味を引く授業に潜り込む生活を続けました。
