今日はアーミッシュの歴史についてご紹介します。アメリカで最も古く、最も大きいアーミッシュコミュニティは、1720年代にペンシルベニア州ランカスターにやってきたアーミッシュです。
アーミッシュのはじまり
ペンシルベニア州のアーミッシュコミュニティの歴史は、16世紀のヨーロッパの宗教改革までさかのぼります。
当時盛んだったアナバプテスト運動が、アーミッシュ、メノナイト、ブレザレン教会という3つの「簡素な」コミュニティの創設につながりました。この3つは似ていますが、アーミッシュは最も保守的であり、謙虚さ、家族、コミュニティを大切にし、電気などの現代的な便利さから離れることを含めて非アーミッシュの世界からの分離を求めています。
The story of the Pennsylvania Amish community dates back to the 16th century Reformation in Europe, when the Anabaptist movement spurred the creation of three “plain” communities: the Amish, Mennonites and Brethren. Although these spiritual groups have similarities, the Amish are the most conservative, emphasizing humility, family, community and separation from the non-Amish world, which includes a reluctance to adopt modern conveniences such as electricity.

この保守的なキリスト教信者たちは、アナバプテスト（キリスト教派の一つ）を信仰したためにヨーロッパでの迫害から逃れ、18世紀初頭にペンシルベニアにやって来ました。ランカスター郡のペンシルベニア州アーミッシュコミュニティは、米国で最も古く、最大のアーミッシュコミュニティであり、その数は約30,000人です。過去20年間で2倍以上になっています。
The Pennsylvania Amish believe that community harmony is threatened by secular values such as individualism and pride, which permeate the modern world.
So, where did the Pennsylvania Amish come from? Members of this conservative Christian faith came to Pennsylvania in the early 18th century to escape persecution in Europe for their Anabaptist beliefs. The Pennsylvania Amish community in Lancaster County is the oldest and largest Amish community in the United States, numbering about 30,000. The population has more than doubled in size in the past 20 years.

アーミッシュのルーツ
アーミッシュはメノナイト・コミュニティにルーツを持っています。
アーミッシュもメノナイトも、宗教改革の時にヨーロッパで起こった初期のアナバプテスト運動の一部でした。アナバプテストは、自分の信仰を告白した大人だけがバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けるべきであり、より大きな社会からは離れたままでいるべきだと信じていました。
初期のアナバプテストは、カトリックとプロテスタント双方から異端者として多くが死刑にされ、信者はスイスや南ドイツの山々に逃れました。こういった背景から、教会ではなく家で農業と礼拝を行うというアーミッシュの伝統が始まりました。
The Amish have their roots in the Mennonite community. Both were part of the early Anabaptist movement in Europe, which took place at the time of the Reformation. The Anabaptists believed that only adults who had confessed their faith should be baptized, and that they should remain separate from the larger society. Many early Anabaptists were put to death as heretics by both Catholics and Protestants, and many others fled to the mountains of Switzerland and southern Germany. Here began the Amish tradition of farming and holding worship services in homes rather than churches.
