みなさん、こんにちは。昨日に引き続き、Steve Jobsのスピーチの1つ目のポイント「点を点のつながり」について英語で見ていきましょう。
興味がある講義で得た知識?
It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

食べ物を買うために、コカ・コーラの瓶を店に返し、5セントをかき集めたりもしました。そして、温かい食べ物にありつこうと、毎週日曜日は7マイル先にあるクリシュナ寺院に徒歩で通ったものです。それでも本当に楽しい日々でした。
自分の興味の赴くままに潜り込んだ講義で得た知識は、のちにかけがえがないものになりました。
カリグラフィーとの出会い✍
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.
訳：）当時、リード大学は、国内最高のカリグラフィーの指導をしていました。 キャンパスの貼られているポスターや棚のラベルは美しい手書きで書かれていました。
退学を決めて必須の授業を受ける必要がなくなったので、カリグラフィーの講義で学ぼうと思いました。
ひげ飾り文字を学び、文字を組み合わせた場合のスペースのあけ方も勉強しました。
カリグラフィーは美しく、伝統的で芸術的に優れています。私は、科学では説明できない繊細な文字の世界のとりこになったのです。
一言メモ：カリグラフィーとは?
彼の言っている「カリグラフィー」の語源は、ギリシア語の「CALLI(美しく)」と「GRAPHEIN(書くこと)」に由来しています。
このことからもわかるように、カリグラフィーの定義は、美しい線によってつくられた美しいアルファベット表現とされています。
印刷技術の発展とともに手書き文字の必要性は薄れ、なくなってしまった字体もありますが、現在ではアート、デザイン、工芸などさまざまな分野で活用されています
美しいPCフォントの誕生
None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it’s likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

ところが10年後、最初のマックを設計していたとき、カリグラフィーの知識がアイディアとして蘇ってきたのです。そして、その知識をすべて、マックに注ぎ込みました。美しいフォントを持つ最初のコンピューターの誕生です。
もし、大学でカリグラフィーの講義を受けなかったら、マックには多様なフォントや字間調整機能も入っていなかったでしょう。ウィンドウズはマックをコピーしただけなので、パソコンにこうした機能が盛り込まれることもなかったでしょう。
もし、私が退学を決心していなかったら、あのカリグラフィーの講義に潜り込むことはなかったし、パソコンが数々のすばらしいフォントを備えることもなかったでしょう。
もちろん、当時は先々のために点と点をつなげる意識などありませんでした。しかし、ふり返ると、将来「点と点がつなる、役立つこと」をしっかり学んでいたのです。
点と点のつながりとは・
Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life. Because believing the dots will connect down the road, it gives you confidence to follow your heart; even it leads you off the well-worn path. And that will make all the difference.
将来を見据えて、点と点をつなぎあわせることなどできません。その時に一生懸命がんばったことが「点」となるのです。
あなたが、いまやっていることが「点」となり、人生のどこかでその「点」がつながって実を結ぶのです。
「点」をつくるには、何かを信じて前に進むことです。その「点」は、やる気、運命、その他いろいろです。はっきり言えるのは、その時々の「点」が人生を変えるのです。
私は、自分がつけた「点」をつなげ、それを「道」としてそれを進み、自信をつけました。その「点」は、自分がかつて経験したことに戻してくれることもあります。
それぞれの「点」が差をつけるのです。
